56 .4% of the total disease burden in India is due to unhealthy diets, said a recent report by the Indian Council of Medical Research, ICMR, and the National Institute of Nutrition. A group of 17 comprehensive recommendations has been created by a diverse team of specialists under the guidance of Dr.
Hemlata Ar, Director of ICMR NIN. The new dietary guidelines for Indians emphasizes on consuming fruits, nuts, and seeds, eggs, and meat. The guidelines restricted the consumption of cereals to less than 50%, which is currently up to 70%. For pulses, eggs, and fresh foods, the total energy percentage should be around 14 -15%. Nuts, oil, seeds, milk, and milk products should contribute up to 8 -10% of total energy per day, while total fat intake should be less than or equal to 30% energy.
According to the dietary guidelines, one should consume 2 ,000 kilocalorie daily, which must have about 250 grams of cereals, 400 grams of vegetables, 100 grams of fruits, 85 grams of pulses, eggs, flesh foods, 35 grams of nuts and seeds, and 27 grams of fats and oils.
The guidelines also calls for avoiding protein supplements for building body mass, restricting salt intake, moderating intake of oils and fats, adopting a healthy lifestyle to prevent obesity. It also emphasizes on maintaining proper exercise, minimizing ultra -processed foods, and reading information on food labels to make informed and healthy food choices.
