Sikh Takht Issues Dress Code and Venue Guidelines for Weddings, Urging Simplicity and Tradition

Nanded, Maharashtra: Hazur Sahib, one of the five Sikh takhts recognized as the spiritual and temporal centers of the faith, has issued an advisory outlining a dress code and venue restrictions for Anand Karaj ceremonies, traditional Sikh weddings held in Gurudwaras.

The announcement, made by Takht Jathedar Kulwant Singh on Friday, emphasizes simplicity and adherence to Sikh traditions over extravagance and ostentatious displays. This follows a similar October directive from Akal Takht against holding Anand Karaj outside of Gurudwaras.

Brides Urged to Ditch Lehengas for Sarwar Kameez and Chunni:

The advisory encourages brides to choose Sarwar Kameez and Chunni, the traditional Sikh attire, instead of the increasingly popular lehengas. Citing concerns about practicality and respect, the statement highlights the difficulty brides face in performing obeisance before Guru Granth Sahib while wearing heavy and voluminous lehengas. Additionally, the dress code reinforces the symbolic significance of the Sarwar Kameez, representing the six Sikh traditions.

Promoting Gurudwaras over “Destination Weddings”:

Building upon Akal Takht’s earlier Hukam Nama, Hazur Sahib reiterates the sanctity of Gurudwaras as the sole venue for Anand Karaj ceremonies. The practice of taking Guru Granth Sahib to resort weddings, farmhouses, and beaches is discouraged, emphasizing the importance of adhering to established traditions within the holy spaces dedicated to Sikh worship.

Curbing Extravagant Spending and Maintaining Sanctity:

The advisory also encourages Gurudwaras in Nanded to implement the guidelines and discourages unnecessary expenditure associated with weddings. The focus is on upholding the spiritual significance of the Anand Karaj ceremony by prioritizing prayer and tradition over lavishness.

This move by Hazur Sahib marks a concerted effort to preserve the core values and practices of Sikhism within the context of evolving wedding trends. While some may see it as an attempt to enforce rigidity, the focus on practicality, tradition, and spiritual sanctity resonates with many Sikhs seeking to reaffirm their cultural identity during a significant life event.
